In our yesterday’s news about Sony’s release of the new CLIE PEG-UX50 Pocket PC, we announced that the new product is based on an integrated Handheld Engine. Today there is an opportunity to tell in more detail about this chip, fortunately, with its release, one can count on the fact that Sony will not fail to release other handhelds based on it in the future.

So, the real name of the Handheld Engine processor according to Sony technical specifications is CXD2230GA. The chip will be produced at the company’s own facilities, at the factory of the Sony Computer Entertainment division in Nagasaki Prefecture. Like most similar processors, the Handheld Engine is based on the ARM core, includes an integrated SRAM, DRAM, 2D graphics core, a wide range of peripheral interfaces, including a digital camera interface, support for a Memory Stick slot, etc. The processor is characterized by low power consumption, thanks to the use of the original bus technology of its own design, the performance of the chip is sufficient for playing video with sufficient quality.
