Scientists from Lucent Technologies Bell Labs have found that some types of sponges contain optically transparent fibers, very similar in their properties to industrial fiber. At the same time, the natural optical fiber of ocean sponges even surpasses the material used in high-speed communication lines in some parameters.
The ocean sponge Euplectella, also known as the Venus Flower Basket, lives at great depths in tropical latitudes, reaching up to 15 cm in length. The skeleton of Euplectella is made of vitreous quartz and has a bizarre shape. It is very common to find mating shrimps inside this sponge. However, the most interesting thing is at the bottom of the skeleton, from where a bundle of fibers 5 to 18.5 cm long and as thick as a human hair (40-60 microns) radiates down and to the sides. Each of these fibers consists of several concentric cylinders: in the center is fairly pure quartz, and on the outside it is surrounded by several organic layers. In industrial fiber (about 110 microns thick), the inner pure quartz fiber is surrounded by several layers with a slightly different refractive index of light. In both, high transparency is achieved through the use of the effect of total internal reflection.
And although sponge fibers are inferior in transparency to industrial fiber, they have significantly better resistance to mechanical damage – bending and breaking. The most annoying thing for industrial fiber is that sometimes breaks can occur spontaneously, but finding them is a non-trivial and time-consuming task.
So if we can copy the process of creating such fibers, which takes place at a low temperature in sea water, it will be possible to talk about a new method of creating optical fiber, which may be cheaper than the current one.
