IBM introduces new DB2 software
IBM Introduces Cube Views, new DB2 software that better prepares complex information for analysis with a wide range of third-party business intelligence applications.
During development, DB2 Cube Views was codenamed Aurora. It uses unique algorithms and automates the creation of metadata for real-time analytic processing (OLAP ? Online Analytical Processing). This includes the definition, description and indexing of information contained in the database, which is done in such a way that this information can be studied from various angles. With Cube Views, you can create metadata for OLAP for the first time for the first time, so that end users, programmers, and various business intelligence applications can share it and reuse it over and over again at every stage of data collection and analysis.
Programmers can use this metadata to further prepare information for analysis by aggregating data into cuboidal four-dimensional charts that show data from multiple perspectives. For example, a cube can show product sales by region, time period, seller, profit, and ad campaign. Immediately thereafter, end users use a variety of query and reporting tools from different vendors that best suit their specific analysis needs. For example, one department might use an application to evaluate its product from a historical perspective, and another department might use a different set of tools to predict future sales for another product or region.
Since this software uses industrial protocols, and the technology itself is centralized and standardized in the database, different applications from different manufacturers involved in different stages of OLAP can now easily share metadata. Now these apps can also be used without the need for long training. Fifteen BI vendors including Brio, Crystal Decisions, Cognos, Microstrategy, Informatica and Business Objects have joined in supporting this new IBM tool as they believe it will be a good addition to their own offerings. These companies believe that DB2 has grown significantly as a business intelligence platform.
With Cube Views, DB2 now offers a built-in “performance consultant” that streamlines and automates the process of collecting and marking up information before analyzing it. By collecting information that is best suited to a particular type of query, third-party business intelligence applications can run faster even in complex situations where the same information is explored in different dimensions, in different ways, and by different departments. Better system and application performance can also enable customers to reduce human and computer resource costs when analyzing data.
Cube Views also features XML data previews and a Web services-based interface that returns OLAP query results in a popular and familiar Web format, making it more accessible to different people.
Cube Views will be priced at $ 7,500 per processor and will ship worldwide on June 27.
