Contract prices for memory rose, but it did not bring joy

According to DRAMeXchange, contracted
prices for 256 Mbit DDR chips in the second half of June increased by only 5-6%,
but the rise in spot prices, on the contrary, is quite large. So 256 Mbit DDR400 SDRAM
in less than a month they have risen in price by $ 2 and now their average price is
about $ 5.29 per chip. Many market participants believe that the prices are 256 MB
memory modules now hit the $ 34-38 mark.

As noted by The Digitimes reviewers,
on the one hand, an increase in contract prices ? positive point, but in this case
disappointment experienced by both memory makers and PC OEMs.
The former are dissatisfied with the fact that prices did not rise as much as they wanted, the latter
they cannot justify such growth either, since they do not see significant growth
consumer demand. The rise in spot prices PC OEMs generally consider
a sign of correction
stocks, which gave rise to the illusion of increased demand.

Will the third quarter be the season of peak PC sales? ? unknown (last year,
for example, memory makers hoped in vain for the “back to school” season),
but still the industry lives in expectation of the best.
