Intel acquires West Bay Semiconductor, a communications equipment maker
Intel has announced the acquisition of Canadian (Vancouver) West Bay Semiconductor, known for its development of high-speed communication chips for voice and data transmission over optical networks with the SONET / SDH (Synchronous Optical Networking / Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) hierarchy.
According to Intel, it plans to integrate West Bay architecture into next-generation communication chips, with 90nm process technology. As a result of the deal, the details of which have not been disclosed, the majority of West Bay Semiconductor employees will go to work in the Intel Optical Products Group (OPG), which develops and manufactures optoelectronic components and optical subsystems.
Founded in 1999, West Bay has recently been developing a range of communications products for channels up to 2.5 Gbps. In addition, West Bay Semiconductor has also developed communication compression technologies that deliver thousands of voice and data streams per channel at once.
