The future of display technology: the electrowetting effect

According to the Philips Research Center in Eindhoven, electrowetting technology, which has recently become a popular subject for laboratory research, could also form the basis for the creation of a new generation of displays.

New displays consist of a thin layer of oil-water emulsion. The essence of the effect of electronic wetting is that drops of colored water in a hydrophobic medium can partially wet and appear on the surface.

Interestingly, the prototypes of the new displays have significantly lower inertia (less than 10 ms) and higher reflectivity (more than 40%) compared to LCD displays, although they are inferior in contrast (15: 1). According to Philips, based on electronic wetting technology, it will be possible to create displays with optical characteristics similar to paper, with inertia imperceptible to the eye. It is also possible to create such displays on a flexible substrate and use them in e-books.
