PowerPC 440EP: IBM Embedded Processor
IBM announces its intention to release an embedded microprocessor equipped with a floating point module and interfaces for working with USB ports and NAND flash memory (NAND flash memory). The processor, dubbed the PowerPC 440EP, will target the market for network controllers, imaging modules and industrial systems. Thus, IBM hopes to expand the range of applications of the PowerPC processor core. It is possible that IBM decided to follow the example of AMD, which recently moved from the category of a developer and manufacturer of only processors for desktop PCs, servers and laptops to the category of vendors of embedded architectures, which resulted in the acquisition of Alchemy and the announcement of several solutions.
The PowerPC 440EP is manufactured in a 0.13-micron CMOS (CMOS) process and operates at clock speeds up to 533 MHz. Sample microprocessors will be available starting in December, with bulk shipments expected in the first quarter of 2021.
