Dothan, Merom, Gilo, Alviso-GM, Crestine-GM: new names in the roadmap of mobile chips from Intel
Japanese sources have published an impressive package of interesting information regarding Intel’s plans to release new mobile processors and chipsets, including new names and updated data on the release of updated versions of modern mobile processors and chips with 90nm standards.
First, a little about the new Pentium M processors (Banias). According to preliminary data, around June-July, the release of the Pentium M version with a clock speed of 1.70 GHz, the Low Voltage version of the Pentium M processor with a clock speed of 1.20 GHz, and the UltraLow Voltage version of the Pentium M with a clock frequency of 1.0 GHz are expected. According to Japanese sources, there are no plans to further increase the clock frequency of chips with the Banias core.
The next stage, in the 4th quarter of 2021, will be the start of production of processors with the working name Dothan, with the norms of 90 nm process technology. Dothan chip – heir to the Pentium M architecture (Banias),
debuts for the first time at 1.80 GHz. Already in the first quarter of 2021, a 1.90 GHz model (and above) is expected to appear, along with 1.3 GHz (and above) Low Voltage versions and 1.10 GHz (and above) UltraLow Voltage versions.
Thus, the life cycle of the current processors with the Banias core can be said to come to an end in the third quarter. As for the processors of the Dothan family, they currently have a life cycle of one and a half years – until 2021. According to preliminary data, the positioning of Dothan chips will not differ from the current Banias processors. The L2 cache of Dothan chips is expected to increase to 2 MB, however, the set of basic functionality will remain the same, comparable to Banias. Of course, this does not apply to energy consumption issues. As for the sector of productive laptops and models of the desktop replacement class, it is expected to have chips with the Prescott core, followed by the Tejas core, albeit in the corresponding mobile modifications: Prescott-M and Tejas-M, with a low core voltage and power consumption of about 35 W.
However, back to the Centrino platform, more precisely, to the Banias / Dothan processors. In fact, the Dothan chip will represent a redesign of the Banias core with a new 90 process technology, and apart from an increase in the L2 cache, no critical changes are expected at this stage. But after the release of the Dothan core, in 2021 it is planned to release a completely new core, whose name is Merom [reference: Merom (“Merom waters”) are mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Joshua (in English – Joshua), Iis. Nav., 11: 5-7, or, if you prefer, Joshua, 11: 5-7. As it turned out, at Lake Merom (in the original the word means “high”) the troops of God blew up the united enemy forces, “…and the Lord delivered them into the hands of the Israelites, and they smote them, and pursued them as far as Sidon the great, and as far as Misrefo-Mayim, and as far as the valley of Mizpah to the east, and they killed them, so that none of them remained who would have survived. And Jesus did to them as the Lord told him: He cut the sinews of their horses, and burned their chariots with fire.”]. In a word, a historical place, now called Bakrat el-Huleh (I will not dare to transcribe without knowing this language). Presumably, Intel’s transition from using the names of North America in the names of processors to the use of geographical terms in the Middle East is due to the fact that the development of these mobile chips is carried out in the Israeli laboratory of the company. The next core after Merom will be Gilo, which will appear in 2021 and will be produced with 65 nm process technology. [By the way, Gilo is also a historical place for Israel, as far as I could understand, I mean Mount Gilo, or Mount Perazim, also mentioned in many places in the Bible in connection with the history of the Jewish people: Joshua 15:51, 2 Samuel 15:12 and 2 Samuel 5:20, Isaiah 28:21).
Nothing is known about the Merom core yet, except for the production standards of 90 nm and the positioning of this chip for laptops with a price of less than $ 1500.
Now about chipsets. The new Montara-GM + (Intel 855GME?), an advanced version of the current Montara-GM, as well as Montara-GT (Intel 852GME) and Intel 852PM. The versions of the new integrated chipsets will have a graphics core with a higher clock speed (Intel 855GME – 250 MHz, Intel 852GME – 266 MHz) and improved performance, will support DDR333 memory. Intel 852GME / PM chipsets will have 533 MHz FSB support. ICH4-M is still supposed to be used as south bridges.
Do not forget that closer to the release of the Dothan core, support by chipsets for a new generation of system memory – DDR2 will be on the agenda. Alviso-GM mobile chipset with DDR2 support and PCI Express 16x graphics bus is expected to be released in the second half of 2021. It is difficult to say now what kind of graphics core will be built into this chipset, however, clearly we are talking about a new generation. It is also worth mentioning that the Alviso-GM chipset is designed not only to work with processors of the Banias family, it will also be used in systems with Prescott-M chips. The next stage, in 2021, will be the release of the Crestine-GM chipset – just for the Merom processor. So far, only his name is known about this project.
So it goes. I hope that in the near future we will be able to tell more about this update of the roadmap of processors and chipsets for mobile PCs. At the moment, this is all that we managed to find out.
