This week, a significant number of assumptions about future versions of chipsets and processors from Intel came from various sources on the Web. Of course, the company does not comment on such publications in any way, therefore, in fact. we publish this collection “on the rights of rumors”.

First, some details on the Grantsdale chipset following the Canterwood chipset and expected in 2021. Grantsdale chipset will ship with ICH6 southbridge, FSB up to 1066 MHz, dual channel DDR2 memory, PCI Express x16 graphics interface, PCI Express bus, next generation integrated audio.

The well-known Big Water platform, promoted by Intel since last year, the characteristics of its motherboards and power supplies are designed specifically for solutions based on the Grantsdale chipset. By the way, it is noteworthy that not PCI Express will be used as a bus between the south MCH and the north ICH bridges of the new Grantsdale chipset, but the new DMI (Direction Media Interface) interface with a bandwidth of up to 2 Gb / s. There are no details about the new bus yet, however, of course, it will not be HyperTransport. 🙂

As for the capabilities of the ICH6 south bridge, it is roughly known that, unlike ICH5, the number of supported Serial ATA ports will be increased in the new version to four, but there will be only one parallel port. Of course, the new south bridge will have integrated support for next-generation audio technology – Azalia.

Grantsdale chipset will support both 800 MHz FSB and 1066 MHz. By the way, the 1066 MHz FSB with a bandwidth of up to 8.5 GB / s matches well with the DDR2-533 memory. The chipset will support processors in the LGA755 design. What kind of processors? Most likely, we are talking about processors with the Prescott core, which will be produced not only in MPGA478, but also in the new LGA755 package. However, in the same 755-pin LGA package, processors with the Tejas core are expected to be released. By the way, since I had to by the way: here is a photo of “a 755-pin processor, very similar to Tejas”, as it was dubbed on The Inquirer website:

Of course, neither Canterwood nor Springdale can cope with the LGA755, and they do not have PCI Express support. However, do not forget that the information is still at the “pitchfork on the water” level. Everything may have changed by then.

Another interesting note about the characteristics of the Grantsdale chipset: according to preliminary data, both DDR2 and the current generation DDR-I memory will be supported. The main characteristics of the chipset emphasize the operation of the memory controller in dual-channel mode, however, it is possible that single-channel low-end versions of the chipset will also be presented.

Finally: an approximate picture of the upcoming events for the release of new chipsets from Intel (table – from the RojakPot website. Interestingly, judging by this table, before the release of the Grantsdale chipset, we still have to get acquainted with at least Turbowood and Copper River chipsets. It is pointless to speculate further without any more or less reliable data about these chipsets.
