EDEX2021: OLED, glasses-free stereo displays
Canterwood and Pentium 4 with 800 MHz FSB a little neglected
was the EDEX2021 Electronic Display Exhibition that opened in Japan,
conducted by JEITA. We will try to catch up.
The exhibition is dedicated to advances in the field of displays, in particular, presented
a large number of organic electroluminescent displays (OLEDs). Recall,
that unlike LCDs, OLEDs do not need backlighting; moreover differ
bright colors, wide viewing angle. Nowadays more and more
PDA and mobile phone manufacturers strive to use OLED in their
Ltd unveiled a 3.5 “OLED prototype capable of independently producing
color correction, or rather, according to company representatives, “eliminates
color mismatch “with long term use of the display. Massive
production of such displays, according to a representative of Hitachi Displays, will begin
during a year.
Seiko Epson Corp
presented a transparent OLED at the exhibition, transparency is achieved through the use of
transparent electrodes. Quite effective development; most
developed OLED with one side matte. At EDEX2021 only
single-color displays, but, as the company’s specialists note, the time when the displays
will shine with several colors, already close.
Kodak Japan Ltd brought
to the exhibition digital camera with OLED, EasyShare LS 633. Camera is on sale so far
outside Japan – in Europe and Australia.
No less interesting exhibits of the exhibition are the displays presented by
consortium 3D Consortium (formed in 2021 by developers of hardware
and software, as well as broadcasters, including
Sharp Corp, Sony Corp, and Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd).
Everyone remembered such a reality as “stereocino” (there are still in cinemas
gave stereo glasses)? So, displays with support for “three-dimensional images” are presented by Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd, Sanyo Electric, Sharp and Sony. Among
them – 21 “LCD Samsung display, having 16 points of” 3D-view “(4
horizontally and 4 vertically). And now stereo glasses for such a display are no longer
need. This is achieved thanks to the use of a complex of microlenses.
By the way, stereo glasses are still needed for similar developments by Sanyo and Sharp, since
displays of these companies have 4 and 2 points of “stereo view”, respectively.
Well, and a few words not from my fiefdom – about the software, which was also presented
at the exhibition. Mercury Introduces Software Development for Conversion
2D images to 3D. A prototype laptop was used to demonstrate how the package works
Sharp equipped with digital video camera and 3D LCD monitor. Real-time 2D images were “transformed”.
3D images were displayed at a speed of 27 frames / s. If such software is “sewn” into a specialized LSI, the display speed can be increased up to 30 frames / s.
