You’ve already seen a photo of NVIDIA NV40 and ATI R420?
If not, you can see here: it looks like these are the first pictures of such chips on the Web.
The Inquirer, where they first appeared, claims the photos were taken exclusively at Computex 2021.

Additionally, both cards are reported to be equipped with Micron Technology’s 1.8V GDDR3 graphics memory, clocked at 800MHz and delivering up to 1.6Gbps linear performance per pin. The first GDDR3 SDRAM chips, if you remember, were presented by Micron back in mid-June. The chips are manufactured in compliance with the 0.11 micron technical process, the switching circuit is I / O with pseudo-open drain (PMOS), the organization of the chips is 8 M x 32, 4 banks, is present, according to the standard requirements, 4K regeneration, intra-crystal termination.
The GDDR3 chips are available in a 135-pin FBGA FW package, their capacity is 256 Mbit, and the power consumption is half that of GDDR2 with a 50% increase in speed, according to Micron. Mass production of such memory is scheduled for Micron in the first quarter of 2021.
The first samples of new cards, it seems, will be available in November-December.
It’s hard to refrain from commenting on the ATI R420 chip marking. Please note that on the lid, in addition to the 37 week designation (fresh, September!) and packing place – Taiwan, two logos are affixed – ATI and Micron. Theoretically – easily, despite the clear “sharpened” of the company’s production lines for the release of CMOS matrices and all kinds of memory – SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, RLDRAM, GDDR SDRAM, Q-Flash Memory, CellularRAM and SRAM, she was aiming a couple of years ago to release her chipsets (however, it never came to mass production). In short, pure intrigue.
As for the photos of the NV40 presented above, Andrey, having carefully studied them and the photos of NV38 and NV36 presented by us earlier, expressed an opinion about the too strong similarity of the NV40 and NV36 PCBs. It is possible that the message of The Inquirer contains an error, although, of course, there is no certainty about this. But even if this is not the case, there is a very interesting trend: it is not for nothing that quite recently in our video laboratory experiments were carried out with removing covers from GeForce FX 5600 Ultra chips, which provided a significant increase in performance! Judging by the presented photos of prototypes, NVIDIA is moving in the same direction…
