Overclocking GeForce FX 5600 Ultra and 5900 Ultra, or what happens if you remove the cover from the chip…

The latest news from our video laboratory: having decided not to limit ourselves to experiments with cooling systems for new graphics cards based on GeForce FX series chips, Andrey Vorobyov, editor of our Video System section, tried to remove the covers, which actually play a decorative role, and put the cooling system directly on the GPU core.

The results, frankly speaking, are stunning: under each lid there is a layer of heat-conducting paste, which nevertheless plays the role of an additional “thermal brake” in the overall bundle. The pictures below show an experiment with a GeForce FX 5600 Ultra chip on a video card from Albatron:

What does this experiment give us?? With a neat refinement of the cooling system and its more dense installation directly on the chip – quite a lot. In the above case, the nominal frequency of the chip / memory is 400 MHz / 800 MHz, while the chip could be overclocked to 466 MHz. After revision, the chip began to “chase” up to 500 MHz!

The same experiment was carried out with an ASUS V9950 graphics card based on a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra chip. True, here, due to the specifics of the cooling system (it is common for the chip and memory for the ASUS V9950 card), after removing the cover, it turned out that the heatsink began to miss the chip due to the protrusions on it for the memory chips (note the photo with a close-up on the radiator).

Well, after refining the protrusions by grinding everything fell into place. However, as an option, you can also use a reference cooling system in this case, which, as you know, is separate for memory and a chip. After the revision, it was possible to increase the overclocking of the chip from 496 MHz to 525 MHz at the nominal frequency of 450 MHz, and the memory now operates at frequencies up to 980 at the nominal 850 MHz!

It is difficult to say now, based on what technological ideas such a large gap is left under the chip cover. Perhaps there is some kind of homespun truth in this that we do not yet know about. However, in any case, the experiments have shown that the possibilities of overclocking and improving cards based on GeForce FX 5600 Ultra and 5900 Ultra chips are quite large and the owners of such cards have chances to improve them. And the manufacturers still have chances for the release of “overclocking” card models. 🙂
