IDF Fall 2021: new 64-bit Tanglewood processor. A few words about Tiano

In addition to Intel’s already highlighted plans for the first fall IDF in San Jose (16 ? September 18), it became known that the company also intends to present for the first time details of the new generation of high-end Itanium chips, tentatively named Tanglewood.

The new Tanglewood chip will include up to 16 processor cores in a single package. Initially, it is expected that Tanglewood will be presented with a 4-processor version, manufactured in compliance with the standards of the 90 nm process technology, then, after mastering the 65 nm process technology, 8- and 16-processor chips will appear.

It is too early to talk about the date of the appearance of the Tanglewood series processors, however, given the approximate timing of the release of the dual-core Itanium, codenamed Montecito, it can be assumed that Tanglewood will be presented around 2021.
Intel representatives are already hoping that the power consumption of the new Tanglewood chips will not exceed that of the current Itanium series processors. By the way, the 16-processor core design is nothing new for the company, as Intel is already supplying 16-core server chips.

The term Tiano, which we have already mentioned in one of our previous news, is gradually becoming clearer. This will be the name of the new BIOS version, which is Intel’s first development under the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) initiative. The development of the EFI standard was started by a group of companies several years ago, and it is expected that over time, EFI will replace the traditional 8-bit BIOS.
