Intel MXP5800 and MXP5400 Processors for New Digital Display Devices

Intel today unveils two new programmable multimedia processors ? MXP5800 and MXP5400. The chips were developed in collaboration with Xerox.

The MXP5800 and MXP5400 processors are designed to meet the challenges of digital copiers, scanners, printers, multifunctional devices and other mid to high end digital imaging products. The MXP5800 processor features a scalable array of eight compute units that combine processors for processing data streams with special hardware accelerators. The MXP5400 has four compute units. A feature of the new processors is their programmability, which, in comparison with traditional ASICs, developed from 12 to 24 months, will allow for faster launch of new products, as well as the use of MXP5800 and MXP5400 processors in a variety of product lines.

Chips include 80KB of integrated shared memory, hardware accelerators for key functions, two 16-bit 266 MHz DDR SDRAM memory interfaces (up to 256 MB), two 18-channel DMA controllers, 32-bit 33/66 MHz PCI interface. The chips are made in 456-pin HFC-BGA packages with dimensions of 35 x 35 mm using the 0.13 micron technical process.
