ATI increases orders from TSMC and UMC. Photo of cards based on Radeon 9800 / Radeon 9200 chips
Yesterday’s official statement from ATI Technologies that graphics cards based on the new Radeon 9800 (R350) chip are being transferred from the summer months to April was accompanied by other, no less interesting news – on the same topic, but from other sources. Thus, according to the report of the Taiwanese edition of The DigiTimes, the CEO of the company in a telephone interview made a statement that ATI intends this year to “significantly increase” the volume of orders for the manufacture of chips from its manufacturing partners, TSMC and UMC.
The statement also indicates that ATI does not intend to seek any new manufacturing partners – IBM or anyone else. Instead, ATI intends to significantly increase the volume of orders from traditional partners.
As you know, at present all 0.13-micron chips and a significant part of 0.15-micron chips are ordered by ATI from TSMC, although, according to some reports, some orders for 0.15-micron RV280 chips have already been sent to UMC.
Chips Radeon 9600 (RV350) with 0.13 micron technical process, according to updated data, will be manufactured at the new TSMC factory for the production of 300 mm plates. UMC factories produce 0.15 micron ATI Radeon 9200 (RV280) chips, but in the future their release will be adjusted to 0.13 micron. It also became known that ATI does not intend to produce its chips with 90 micron standards, at least until 2021.
Meanwhile, yesterday in Japan there was, so to speak, a “local” announcement of new products from ATI. New ones conditionally, since they were all presented earlier: these are RADEON 9800 PRO, RADEON 9600 / PRO, RADEON 9200 / PRO, MOBILITY RADEON 9600/9200 chips, MOBILITY RADEON 7000 IGP chipset. As a matter of fact, no technical details, unknown to us, were announced at the event, and we remembered this only because a large number of graphics cards based on new chips were presented at the presentation. Here they are (from thumbnails – links to large photos):
