Sales of i865-based motherboards in June may turn out to be worse than expected
Sales of motherboards based on i865 chipset in June were very low. By
at least that’s what Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers say
high chipset prices are the reason for this. However, so far it is
– only conversations, since no official results were reported for the sale of boards.
Board makers believe that after Intel’s price cuts for pentium 4 at the end
June and July presentation of the 865PL chipset, as well as with the release of VIA Technologies
PT800, DDR400 chipset demand to grow. Currently,
the most popular chipset, i845, costs 10 dollars cheaper on the market
i865. Intel plans to make the latest chipset a mainstream product at
market, assuming that its sales by the third quarter will amount to 30-40% of the total
number of sales and 50% – by the end of the year.
At the same time, motherboard manufacturers are increasing the functionality of their solutions
on the i845, which allows them to compete with the i865. 845D boards support 533
MHz system bus (not 400 MHz, as it was before). 845PE boards support
800 MHz bus (not 533 MHz). 865PE solutions have only one advantage at all
– support for dual channel DDR400 (i845 supports one channel DDR333).
