36 GB AOD drives from Toshiba

Toshiba plans to unveil a new 36GB dual-layer AOD rewritable disc next week during Optical Storage 2021 in Vancouver, Canada. The new disc has the same dimensions as current CD or DVD media. The company will also present 20 GB single-layer, single-sided rewritable disc, 15 GB and 30 GB AOD standard discs for one-time recording.

A new generation of DVD media called AOD (Advanced Optical Disc), developed by Toshiba and NEC within the framework of the project of a new generation of optical DVD drives with so-called “blue” lasers, we have reported in our news several times. The AOD format would be announced by Toshiba and NEC earlier this year at the DVD Forum and is a direct competitor to the Blu-ray Disc format promoted by a consortium of nine companies – Sony, Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric, Philips Electronics, Pioneer Electronics, Samsung Electronics. Sharp and Thomson Multimedia. Unlike the Blu-ray format, the commercialization of which (with a poorly concealed grin) can be called successful – in Japan in April the first and so far the only digital Blu-ray video recorder BDZ-S77 went on sale, the AOD format is still far from mass adoption. The adoption of the final specifications of the standard is planned by the DVD Forum by the end of this year, the development of the final version of AOD devices will end only in 2021. However, according to Toshiba representatives, the final start date for the release of AOD format devices has not yet been determined and depends on the state of the market.

Both companies showcased prototypes of their AOD drives back at CES 2021. At CeBIT 2021, Toshiba showed only a mock-up of the concept, while NEC showed a full-featured PC drive and AOD VCR showing high-quality video recording.

Details of the new technology will also be presented on May 28 at the International Disk Forum 2021 (see. forum program.
