Taiwan Hard Drive Issues: Seagate, Maxtor and HGST Recall Products
According to reports from Taiwan, the three main hard drive vendors Seagate, Maxtor and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies have begun recalling some of their 40 and 80 GB hard drives due to similar defects found in them. Currently, it is known that about 12-15 thousand defective disks have entered the Taiwanese market. Reports on whether there have been shipments of products with a 10% defect to other countries have not yet been received.
Local distributors note that the number of requests for replacement of faulty drives began to grow in April. These are mainly problems with an ever-growing number of bad sectors or with disk formatting. It is alleged that similar problems were observed only with those vendors that produce their drives in China. Presumably, this is why Western Digital currently does not have to recall its drives – the company does not have production facilities in China.
As a possible explanation, the version is put forward that a large percentage of scrap is associated with the haste with which Chinese manufacturers began to move to new production processes. The Maxtor dealership has so far denied the very possibility of defects in the drives supplied to the market, while Seagate promised that all buyers will receive a full guarantee of exchanging faulty drives for new ones.
