Sandia white quantum LEDs: efficient and inexpensive

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories often boggle the imagination with their technological innovations. This time, scientists reported on the integration of quantum dots (literal translation of the original text ? blended quantum dots) into a light emitting diode (LED), thus obtaining a white light source. The main difference between Sandia quantum LED and white LEDs, fluorescent light sources and incandescent lamps is their high efficiency, low cost and ease of manufacture due to the absence of complex phosphorous compounds.

Quantum dots in Sandia mean nanostructures smaller than the wavelength of visible light. Nanostructures are transformed into an excited state by absorbing high-energy ultraviolet photons, and then re-emitting thermal photons in the continuous spectrum. Unfortunately, at the moment, researchers have managed to find only such nanostructures (microcrystals of cadmium sulfate) that emit in the visible range only when excited with ultraviolet light.

Scientists also argue that the efficiency (similar to the efficiency) for phosphorous sources usually does not exceed 50% due to light scattering, while in the new LED, the efficiency can be close to 100%, since the scattering is minimized (due to because the size of nanostructures is less than the wavelength). The creation of microcrystals of cadmium sulfate is now a matter of already proven technology.
