NEC, Matsushita and Coding Technologies Work on New MPEG-4 Decoder

Two Japanese companies, NEC and Matsushita, have partnered with California-based Coding Technologies to join forces to develop a new cost-effective MPEG-4 decoder capable of delivering CD-quality playback at low bit rates. This technology will be in demand in the production of decoders to ensure high-quality sound reproduction in the new 2.5G / 3G phones.

The new cost-effective decoder will be based on spectral band replication (SBR) technology and MPEG-4 SBR aacPlus compatibility. Thanks to the use of SBR technology, new audio codecs are expected to be capable of delivering high quality audio at half the bit rates of current codecs. For example, audio CD recording quality is supposed to be achieved at 48 Kbps bitrate, high-quality stereo sound – already at 32 Kbps bitrate.
