NTT diamond chips operate at frequencies up to 81 GHz

NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone) announces the development of the first semiconductor chip on a diamond substrate, which is said to be capable of operating at frequencies up to 81 GHz. The chip will be used in microwave amplifiers in the ranges from 30 to 300 GHz.

However, the strong dependence of the properties of diamond on the concentration of impurities hindered the development of technologies for its use.

NTT Basic Research Laboratory claims to have created a thin film of very pure diamond by growing at 650-670 degrees Celsius.
