Nanotechnology in the service of ecology: iron nanoparticles against toxins
As it has become customary, nanotechnology has found another good application in, as they would say before, the national economy. So, researchers from Lehigh University propose to use iron nanoparticles to clean the soil from various kinds of toxic substances, introducing them through specially drilled wells. The difference between the new technology and traditional ones is that, according to scientists, nanoparticles are a universal reagent capable of neutralizing a large amount of harmful substances, while usually a neutralizer is used for each individual toxin.
Neutralization occurs as a result of the oxidation of iron in groundwater and the formation of insoluble complexes with toxic substances such as compounds of lead, nickel, mercury and even heavy radioactive nuclides. After the formation of insoluble complexes, the migration of compounds of toxins with iron in groundwater becomes more difficult, and in many cases water samples become cleaner.
The iron approach is not new: some firms have been treating their waste with iron powder for a long time before draining. The use of iron nanoparticles ranging in size from 1 to 100 nm made it possible to achieve good results due to the fact that nanoparticles have a large active surface area and easily capture harmful substances. In addition, you can drill a well to the required depth and literally pump iron there, which will clear an already contaminated soil area within a few days. Based on the results of field studies, scientists report that for cleaning an area of 100 sq. m requires about 12 kg of iron nanoparticles, the cost of which will be about $ 50.
Specially bred bacteria remain the only competitor to iron as a purifying reagent, but unlike them, iron nanoparticles are not so demanding on temperature conditions and food availability.
