Microsoft Acquires Unix Rights … to Strangle Linux?

Yesterday, in an official statement, Microsoft announced that it will acquire the patent and source code for the Unix operating system from SCO, which has become a bone of contention between the company and IBM. Recall that a month ago SCO filed a lawsuit against IBM, accusing the latter of illegal use of Unix code in its Linux server systems and estimating its losses at $ 1 billion.

Currently, Microsoft is confidently ranked first in terms of prevalence on desktop PCs – about 90% or more. However, seeing the increasing distribution of Linux in servers and workstations, Microsoft began to fear this OS like hell. Speaking Sunday night, Microsoft’s Brad Smith said the acquisition of a license from SCO “reflects Microsoft’s respect for intellectual property and a commitment to licensing-regulated intellectual property exchange in the information technology industry. By purchasing a license, we ensure compliance with license agreements and further development of services for Unix “.

Unix was developed over 30 years ago at AT&T Unix Systems Laboratories. Linux, created by Finnish student Linus Torvalds, is very similar to Unix in many ways, which makes porting software from Unix to Linux very easy, and given that Linux is very cheap or nothing, makes it a very dangerous competitor. At one time, AT&T sold the rights to Unix to Novell Networks, and that – Santa Cruz Operation. Caldera International, until then actively selling Linux, bought the rights to Unix and two products from Santa Cruz Operation – OpenServer and UnixWare. Caldera changed its name to SCO Group last year.

Yesterday’s statement from Microsoft confirms the version put forward by some analysts that all the SCO fuss around IBM is started only in order to attract the attention of potential buyers to the company. Now everything depends on what conclusion the court will come to, the first hearing of which is scheduled for June 13.
