Introducing Battlefield 4 Community Operations – News – Battlelog / Battlefield 4
Memory market: contract prices have risen, but market activity is low

As market participants expected, the contract prices for memory for the first half
August rose. Mainstream solutions (256 Mbit DDR 266/333) have risen in price by 9-10%
(up to $ 4.82-5.2), which is in line with OEM predictions of stable
deliveries in the third quarter. On the other hand, to cover losses incurred
in the first half of the year, memory manufacturers had to raise prices.

There is a possibility that in the fourth quarter the average price of DDR chips will exceed
The $ 5 mark is final. In the meantime, the market is going on, frankly,
something strange: despite the encouraging forecasts for traders, the activity is still
remains low – only PC133 and DDR266 chips and modules are actively purchased, which
concerns DDR333 / 400, this memory is purchased almost for specific orders
– no stock for the future. There can be two explanations for this: firstly, summer –
it is impractical to create a vacation season and stocks, and secondly, traders develop
strategy for further behavior in connection with updating contract prices. More likely
in total, the excitement will begin in the second half of August – before the start of the training
years when traders will stock up on memory for the winter period.

Demand for DDR266 still exceeds demand for DDR333 – for the most part it is
valid for non-branded modules. Previous assumptions regarding
developments in the market are confirmed by DRAMeXchage analysts.

As for DDR400, due to the low demand for this type of memory, wait for growth
there are no prices for 256 Mbit chips of this type. Moreover, the remainder of the chips purchased
OEM-manufacturers of modules in June will be enough to satisfy the existing
demand. Manufacturers have only one hope – the release of a single-channel chipset
i848 in mid-August. This, by the way, will give “space” for growth
DDR333 prices.

To the great joy of market participants (not end users), spot
256 Mbit DDR266 prices exceeded contractual prices, a similar situation with 256 Mbit
DDR333 chips also reflects the recovery of the memory market. Currently
the difference between contract and spot prices is 7%, which fits
within the “historically established” framework of 6-8%.
