CeBIT 2021: new VIA initiatives. Mark CoreFusion processor, Nano ITX platform
Just a week ago, we reported in our news that this year VIA begins work on a completely new processor project with the working name Mark. It was very pleasant to receive an official confirmation of this information, as they say, first-hand: the company spoke about the new project, which is fully called Mark CoreFusion, at a conference at the CeBIT 2021 exhibition. So – the first photo and details.
The main idea of the new Mark CoreFusion chip is the integration of the north bridge into the VIA C3 processor – something like C3 (more precisely, the Nehemiah core) and CLE266 in one package. The next step is integration into the southbridge hybrid processor, something of the VT8235 class. In the past, the company had already hatched such a project, then – at CeBIT 2000, plans for the release of an integrated Matthew chip were presented. Subsequently, the project was frozen. However, there is nothing surprising in this: at that time, it was unlikely that anything turned out with sufficient performance. By the way, a similar project from Intel – Timna, was canceled altogether.
Why is the Matthew project revived?? Everything is very simple: the current mini-platform of the company, EPIA, can be called a quite successful project. Why, the company decided, not to strengthen and build on the success. In fact, the design of the Mark chip will be a hybrid microcircuit, now called MCM (Multi Chip on Module). The processor core and the chipset will be manufactured separately, integration onto a single substrate will be performed in accordance with the market demand for models with a certain frequency or in accordance with the wishes of the customer. As a result, the first-generation Mark CoreFusion chip will be a hybrid of 1GHz C3 processor with 1.25V core voltage and 12W power consumption, CLE266 northbridge with integrated S3 CastleRock graphics and hardware support for MPEG-2, analog and DVI decoding. outputs, SDRAM and DDR SDRAM interface (DDR266). Possible Northbridge options PM133 / 266 (Savage4 graphics) or PLE133 (Trident graphics). Both VT8235 and VT8237 are supposed to be used as integrated versions of the south bridge.
Of course, this whole “sandwich” in the form of the current prototype differs in total energy consumption, which does not in any way draw on the version without active cooling. The company’s goal is to bring a Mark CoreFusion solution to work with passive cooling. It is especially emphasized that the company does not pursue any “speed” characteristics when developing the Mark chip.
Another important message from the company was the announcement of the development of a new miniature Nano ITX platform, just for working with the Mark CoreFusion series chips. Unfortunately, there are no details about Nano ITX yet, except for reports that the size of such boards will be less than the mini ITX form factor by about 15%. The point is that such platforms will eventually be integrated directly into LCD monitors, according to VIA’s calculations. Something like this prototype:
