New Blue-Violet Laser from Sanyo Electric for Dual Layer Blue-ray Disc Recording

Sanyo Electric announced the development of a high-power blue-violet semiconductor laser for use in new Blu-ray writing drives. Due to the fact that the input power of the new 405 nm laser per pulse reaches 100 mW, its use for two-layer recording of new standard discs becomes quite relevant.
The peak input power of similar lasers of the previous generation did not exceed 50 mW.

As you know, current single layer Blu-ray discs have a capacity of 27 GB. The use of new lasers will make it possible to double this volume due to the work with the second recording layer.
New semiconductor laser uses gallium nitride (GaN) composite material. Achievement of high radiated power was achieved by the company’s specialists through the use of a special current stabilizer, as well as a high-quality optical part. Basic laser specifications:

  • Continuous optical output power: 50 mW
  • Pulse power of optical radiation: 100mW
  • Threshold current: 40mA
  • Rated current (at a radiation power of 50 mW): 100 mA
  • Emission wavelength: 405 nm
  • Beam angle: 8 ° horizontal / 23 ° vertical

Sample shipments of the new laser will begin in July, with mass production scheduled for early October 2021.
