Automotive manufacturers refused to make battery electric vehicles

According to Western media reports, auto manufacturers and the California state government have ended litigation over electric vehicles, giving up on the latter and asking for more lenient standards for vehicle emissions. General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Isuzu Motors and several other auto manufacturers have agreed to withdraw the arbitration lawsuit in exchange for adopting rules that do not require them to create battery electric vehicles.

The debate about what the future green cars will be has been going on for five years. The new rules for the most populous American state, California, will be similar to the rules for New York, Massachusetts and Vermont and will give developers more freedom in choosing the means to create new types of cars. Thus, it is unlikely that any of the large car manufacturers in the near future will attempt to create a battery electric car. Moreover, the largest car manufacturers consider this enterprise to be absolutely hopeless from an economic point of view in the future.

Litigation with the California government, which issued a decree mandating the sale by 2021 of a certain number of “no-emission cars” in 2021, was first launched by General Motors, accusing the decree of unconstitutionality. The problem is that 1 kWh of lithium-ion battery used in laptops costs about $ 1000, which is exactly ten times the economic benefit threshold for mass production. And the power density of the batteries does not exceed 70-100 W * h per kilogram, which is too little. The only advantages that electric vehicles have in this case are high speed and low noise level.

Given these circumstances, the Californian authorities have adopted new, more relaxed rules that regulate the level of vehicle emissions and allow the use of hybrid fuel technologies, such as methanol. Under the new rules, 10% of cars sold in the state by 2021 should be “no exhaust”, and by 2021 – all.

However, the car manufacturers themselves are in no hurry to develop such machines. General Motors is going to start producing cars on methanol only by 2021. At the same time, General Motors plans to become the first company to sell a million of these cars.
