For the first time in Apple systems debuted 64-bit IBM PowerPC G5 processors with a clock speed of up to 2 GHz, which will also work in dual-processor Power Mac G5 systems. In addition, Apple has seriously revised the architecture of its PCs, and now we can talk about support for AGP 8X, PCI-X buses, up to 8 GB of memory, etc.P.

The first to hit the market are three Power Mac G5 models – M9020LL / A, M9031LL / A and M9032LL / A, respectively, at 1.6 GHz, 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 processors, and the third – on two 2 GHz PowerPC G5 processors. The new processor is available with clock speeds of up to 2 GHz, supports the system bus with a clock frequency of up to 1 GHz, which, in the case of a dual-processor configuration, makes it possible to talk about performance up to 16 Gb / s. The PowerPC G5, as you remember, is based on the 64-bit IBM Power4 core (unlike it, the PowerPC G5 has one core, not two) and is characterized by the following indicators:

  • Computing: 64-bit core with Altivec extended vector instructions for multimedia processing and collaboration on multiprocessor systems
  • Dual pipelined 128-bit engine for SIMD instructions
  • Two independent FPUs
  • Three-component branch prediction block
  • 64 KB instruction cache and 32 KB data cache
  • L2 cache size – 512 KB
  • Full support for 32-bit code
  • PowerPC G5 die area – 118 mm²
  • Organization of support for 32/64-bit architecture: if a special flag is present in the instruction, then 32-bit mode is turned on and the most significant bits in instructions and data are ignored.
