Composite anodes for lithium-ion batteries will increase the capacity by 10 times
Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, due to their properties, are now used in almost all mobile devices. Japanese enthusiasts have even created an electric car powered by lithium-ion batteries that can reach speeds of up to 310 km / h. However, for such a car, the battery capacity is enough for only 1.5 hours of driving. Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories say they have developed a new silicon-graphite composite material for use in lithium-ion battery anodes, which should allow for greater battery capacity.
Scientists said that for three years they worked on different materials and tried pure graphite, oxides, nitrides and various kinds of composite materials, eventually settling on a silicon-carbon composite.
The use of a silicon-carbon anode makes it possible to achieve a capacity, a 10 times greater capacity of a battery with a graphite anode, however, when recharging the battery, problems arose: the anode could not withstand a large current and collapsed, which led to a decrease in capacity in each subsequent recharge cycle. The solution was found in the use in the anode of a material with silicon-carbon microstructures resistant to high current.
However, new anodes cannot yet be used in commercial batteries, since a slight decrease in capacity over time is still observed. Sandia hopes that for the foreseeable future, this decline will be small enough to start manufacturing batteries with composite silicon-carbon anodes.
