Be careful: video cards based on RADEON 9800 / 9800SE chips are different!
The latest news from our video laboratory, I must say, is somewhat alarming: at present, there are more than one modification of cards based on the Radeon 9800SE chip on the market. Everything would be fine, but the difference in their performance and price can differ quite dramatically! And as a result, you can easily “run into” unscrupulous businessmen who will gladly slip you a completely indecent option for decent money. However, first things first.
Here is a photo of the Atlantis RADEON 9800SE 128MB card from Sapphire.
The clock frequencies of the memory chip are 325 MHz / 540 MHz, and everything would be fine, but the bus of such a card ? 128-bit! Earlier, as you remember, we posted a photo of the card on the 9800SE chip from PowerColor. Here’s the trick: the PowerColor version is made on the PCB from 9700 Pro cards, respectively, with a 256-bit memory bus. And now there is a variant of 9800SE from Sapphire on PCB with support for 128-bit memory. The first thing that catches your eye: outwardly, the difference is expressed in the fact that the 9800SE cards from Sapphire with a 128-bit bus are made on a black PCB, while the 9800SE from PowerColor, with a 256-bit layout, are on red cards.
Now ? The most interesting thing: nowadays RADEON 9800SE 128MB cards with a 128-bit bus are shipped in what is called “tons”, the main OEM supplies are “gray” channels, and, of course, many vendors “quite accidentally” do not mark them SE. Agree, the difference in performance and cost between the 9800SE and non-SE RADEON 9800 cards, which are now priced at $ 240, is quite decent.
So, be careful: when you see a card without the “Pro” suffix, keep in mind that you may have one of four versions of the video card in front of you:
- RADEON 9800 SE 128bit BGA
- RADEON 9800 SE 128bit TSOP
- RADEON 9800 SE 256bit BGA
- RADEON 9800
By the way, nowadays you can also find a 9800 Pro Lite card from Sapphire in stores. There is no catch here: the same 9800 Pro with its frequencies, the same performance, but a different PCB. But the price is sometimes even $ 70 less!
As Sapphire representatives explained to us, the 9800 Pro Lite differs from the usual 9800 Pro only in simple packaging and packaging (lite retail). Mainly, such pleasant prices were obtained by reducing the cost of the kit.
P.S. More details about the considerations briefly described in this news can be found in our new article The line from Sapphire based on the RADEON 9200 / 9200SE / 9800, as well as the unique RADEON 9800 PRO Lite, and two RADEON 9800SE.
