IBM and SuSE Linux Receive Security Certification

IBM and SuSE Linux Announce Security Certification for Linux. Certification was issued by SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 running on IBM eServer xSeries after meeting the Common Criteria Security (CC) requirements of ISO 15408. SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 + eServer xSeries is currently certified Evaluation Assurance Level 2+ (EAL2), but IBM and SuSE are not going to stop there and plan to certify SuSE Linux with a higher level of protection – Controlled Access Protection Profile at EAL3 + level for the entire IBM server family. Certification is expected to be carried out this year.

In addition to the Common Criteria certification, SLES 8 (on the IBM eServer platform) is planned to be Common Operating Environment (COE) compliant over time. This means SLES 8 will meet both Common Criteria and COE requirements at the same time. This standard, specifically created for the United States Department of Defense (DoD), is intended to assess the functionality and interoperability of commercially acquired IT products. The COE specification is used to validate the appearance, usability and functionality of products after they have been integrated with government-generated code. Specifically, COE is recognized as the standard computing environment for US government control systems. The certification itself was carried out by Atsec Information Security GmbH, accredited in Germany by the Federal Information Security Organization (BSI).

In addition to developing and certifying Linux as a powerful industry operating system, IBM intends to continue investing in certification of its new and existing products. IBM plans to certify its core virtualization technology – z / VM next year. This environment allows mainframe customers to host tens or even hundreds of Linux operating systems on a single IBM eServer zSeries server. In addition, plans for Linux Common Criteria include IBM middleware package. WebSphere Application Server and Tivoli Access Manager are currently in the certification process, and several other IBM software products are in preparation for certification.
