DRAMeXchange on the memory market last week: there won’t be a miracle
As DRAMeXchange reports in its weekly report, while spot prices for memory begin to decline, contract prices remain flat for now. Of course, the greatest concern among analysts is the spread of the SARS epidemic, however, it is noted that the consequences of the introduction of duties on the import of Korean Hynix products to Europe and North America can be no less serious.
The activity of the Asian market over the past week remained rather weak: in addition to SARS, the May Day holidays in China suspended the market life. In general, there has been a downward trend in prices, both for noname and chips sold under well-known trademarks. Basically, the situation in China affects DRAM suppliers in Hong Kong and Singapore, while Taiwanese vendors supply the bulk of their products to Europe and the United States.
The North American market has somewhat activated after the end of active hostilities in Iraq. Business stabilized, sales of 333 and 400 MHz memory modules began actively. In some cases, suppliers do not even have time to fulfill all orders for modules related to the upcoming release of the Intel 865 chipset. The situation is similar in Europe, although the pace of local market development is slightly slower. By the way, anticipating the situation with Hynix, some resellers managed to create a sufficient stock of modules, and so far no difference in prices in Western and Asian markets has been noticed.
As for memory prices, despite the still low demand for PCs, first-tier OEMs continue to contract purchases according to pre-planned plans. Here we can note a slightly higher demand for SO-DIMMs for notebooks compared to the demand for DIMMs for desktop PCs. But the spot prices for memory, most likely, will still fall below the $ 3 mark, at which they are trying to keep them. This is due to the fact that many seek to complete deliveries before the end of the month and the beginning of the seasonal downturn in market activity. And if nothing extraordinary happens, the DRAM market situation will not improve.
