GDDR2 and GDDR3: Ready for the big release

Targeted at the high-end niche market, GDDR2 SDRAM is expected,
will be massively in demand at the end of this year after the adoption of this type of memory
as an industry standard.

If the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association GDDR2 is accepted as
standard in July, we can assume an increase in the production of these chips and a decrease
prices for them.

As there is a prospect for the adoption of GDDR2 as a new standard,
competition between Hynix Semiconductor, Samsung Electronics and Winbond Electronics
– each of the companies offers its own version of the chips.

Matthew Godfrey, Analyst at Semico Research Corp., notes,
that the existence of several versions of GDDR2 SDRAM chips has led to an increase in prices for
this memory, which limited the range of memory chips that claimed to be used
in high-end graphics cards.

Video card manufacturers are constantly in need of a new
high-speed RAM, so it has long been noted the need to adopt
JEDEC New Standard for Graphics Memory Versions.

For example, ATI Technologies Inc. decided to use it as
frame buffer in Radeon 9800 Pro non-standard GDDR2 SDRAM. Nvidia uses
a completely different GDDR2 in the GeForce FX line. None of the companies, however, has
the nearest plans to use GDDR2 in mass-produced cards until then,
until prices for a new type of memory begin to fall.

According to the director of memory sales at Nvidia, currently the share of GDDR2,
used in the company’s video cards is only 10%. Depending on the
chip prices, this figure may increase by the end of the year by 30%.

Trident Microsystems Inc Management. does not plan to release boards with
GDDR2 before JEDEC adopts new standard. Samsung, main supplier
GDDR2, is closely following the progress of JEDEC in terms of memory of the new
generation and is currently developing an upgraded version of the chip with
taking into account the wishes of JEDEC for a new generation of chips for video cards.

Delays in Adopting GDDR2 SDRAM as the New Memory Standard for Graphics Cards
and, accordingly, the shift in the timing of potential price reductions led to the fact that,
that many memory manufacturers including Infineon Technologies and Micron Technology
Inc. just bypassed this type of memory and did not include it in their roadmaps.

Another manufacturer, Elpida Memory Inc., also dropped production
GDDR2 chips for desktop graphics cards and is working with ATI on a mobile version
chips, GDDR2-M, which is expected to hit the market in the third quarter.

JEDEC, in turn, is trying to develop a standard for GDDR2, combining
timings and specifications of versions of Hynix, Infineon and Winbond chips, without highlighting
some one version.

Well, okay, while manufacturers are engaged in GDDR2, it seems that the moment of appearance has come
GDDR3. So on the development of this memory, which will go into mass production
in the second half of this year, Micron focused. Work on architecture
chips are led by several memory manufacturers under the leadership of ATI. Unlike
from GDDR2, the situation with GDDR3 is more understandable – manufacturers have developed common standards
for chips and JEDEC is already preparing a draft version of the standard.

Power consumption of GDDR3 is half that of GDDR2, and the operating speed is 50%
above. At least that’s what Micron’s Chief Executive Officer for Strategic
marketing.

GDDR3 Micron chips will be made according to the 0.11-micron technical process, which will allow
to bring the data transfer rate up to 1.5 Gbps per pin (clock frequency
chips work – 700 MHz). Chip samples will be presented in the next quarter.
