Microsoft allows modification of Windows CE
It seems that the process of opening the “iron curtain” over the code of Microsoft operating systems has taken a new development: yesterday the company announced that it would allow modification of the code of its software, in particular, for pocket PCs and cash registers. This is another demonstration that the company has chosen a rather flexible approach, apparently with the aim of attracting new customers who did not dare to use Microsoft software due to insufficient suitability for their tasks.
Analysts believe that Microsoft’s new move may lead to increased competition with Linux (although I personally find it a little strange to use Linux in cash registers, and Linux PDAs are still quite rare). But the new licensing initiative should allow Windows CE applications to expand their range of applicability to markets such as cell phones and industrial robots.
Let us remind you once again that until now Microsoft guarded the code of its operating systems, perhaps more seriously than a bird with its nest with unhatched chicks. Not so long ago, the company agreed to open the code of its operating systems to governments and now, in order to conquer new markets, is ready to do the same with Windows CE, but for its customers, and allowing them to modify the system code.
