Telos – the straw that can save the US power grid from blackouts
As the group of engineers concluded, the massive power outages in Canada and the United States in the middle of the month could have been avoided if the local overload warning system had been activated in the electrical grids. Engineers led by a professor at Purdue University believe that the warning system should use the latest technological advances, including “neural” networks and fuzzy logic.
In order to avoid such massive outages in the future, engineers propose not to strengthen power supply lines by increasing their maximum load, but a special strategy for monitoring their condition using Internet resources.
The current system for monitoring the condition of power lines is hopelessly outdated, adding more wires will only increase the likelihood of error, and the speed of reaction will slow down. Due to the fact that the warning was sent over a telephone wire, it did not have time to warn the neighboring power plants in time, which cascaded from Ohio to New York and further north.
However, after any cataclysm, there are always people who claim that they, they say, warned everyone, but no one listened to them. Another message, already from the Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois, suggests that they predicted a cascading shutdown two years ago. On the positive side, the state has created a consortium of researchers from Purdue, Fisk University, University of Tennessee, Tennessee Valley Authority, Commonwealth Edison of Northern Illinois, and Electric Power Research Institute. The main task of this consortium is the development and implementation of a special monitoring and control system for the state of power transmission lines.
Special software agents (software agents), which are part of a single “neural” network, monitor and remember energy consumption at key points: factories, hospitals, commercial buildings and enterprises, depending on the time of day and season. Based on the collected data, it will be possible to estimate the load on the line a few minutes and even hours before the peaks – for this, fuzzy logic is used.
The researchers called their system Telos (transmission entities with learning capabilities and online self-healing). At the first stage of the implementation of the system, software agents will be connected to computers in municipal buildings and corporations. In the future, it is planned to implement hardware and install hardware agents in new generation electricity meters. If all goes well, hardware implementations will cost about two dollars per processor.
