New magnetic material will increase the recording density hundreds of times
A group of researchers from Switzerland, Italy, France and Germany report observing a record high energy level of magnetic anisotropy in cobalt on a platinum substrate. Magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) exceeded 9 meV. This result, scientists are sure, will help to better understand the essence of the phenomena of magnetism on a molecular scale and create new magnetic materials for information carriers.
Magnetic anisotropy characterizes the degree of ordering of the magnetic moments of atoms. Usually, the higher the value of the magnetic anisotropy energy, the higher the magnetization. The experiment used a thin cobalt layer deposited on a platinum substrate using molecular epitaxy. To determine the energy of magnetic anisotropy, a field up to 7 Tesla was applied to the sample, after which the value of remanent magnetization was measured. The MAE value in the experiment was 9.3 +/- 1.6 meV, which is about 200 times higher than in the usual crystalline state of cobalt. By the way, the energy of magnetic anisotropy in samarite cobalt used in the so-called permanent magnets is about 1.8 meV per atom.
High energy of magnetic anisotropy can significantly reduce the number of atoms involved in the formation of magnetization, distinguishable by the reader. If now about 100,000 atoms per bit are required, then for a new material – several hundred, which means that a significant increase in the density of information recording is possible.
