Logic elements of the future: based on MRAM cells

Until now, the traditional approach to building computers has been the separation of nodes that process data and nodes that store them. However, scientists Andreas Ney and Paul Drude from the Berlin Institute of Technology believe that it is possible to combine elements that process and store data into one, built on the basis of a magnetic storage cell. Scientists claim that their gate can perform any of four basic logical operations: AND (AND), OR (OR), AND-NOT (NAND) and OR-NOT (NOR).

The structure of the logic element repeats the structure of the storage cell of magnetoresistive memory (MRAM), consisting of two ferromagnetic layers separated by a conductive layer. If the magnetizations of both layers coincide (parallel), the electrical resistance of the cell is small – this corresponds to a logical unit. If the magnetizations of the layers are directed in different directions (more precisely, antiparallel), then the electrical resistance of the cell is high, and this state corresponds to logical zero.

Magnetization, in turn, changes its magnitude and direction when current is passed through the input channels (greater than a certain threshold). When using two input channels, the cell (depending on the direction of the current in the output channel) behaves like an AND or OR element. And by adding a third input channel, the researchers got an inverter. In this case, the cell can still be used as a non-volatile storage element.
