NEC carbon nanotubes to hit chips by 2021
According to NEC on Friday, the company’s engineers have succeeded in creating a technology that can stably grow carbon nanotubes and make transistors based on them. According to the company, nanotube transistors are more than ten times steeper than silicon MOS (metal-oxide-semiconductor) transistors.
NEC thinks it will be able to release the first commercial microcircuits based on carbon nanotubes by 2021. The first step towards this has already been taken – a chemical vapor substitution (CVD) process has been developed and a catalyst has been found that allows growing nanotubes on the surface of a silicon crystal. At the same time, it was possible to control the orientation of the nanotubes.
The second step to be taken is to create electrodes with as low contact resistance as possible. The company sets itself the task of creating such a transistor, the slope of the characteristic of which will be about 20 times greater than that of silicon MOSFETs.
