According to The Digi Times, the agreement between Intel and VIA concluded the day before yesterday could lead to increased competition with SiS and second-tier motherboard manufacturers that used VIA chipsets, as the company can now work directly with OEMs and first-tier manufacturers.
Due to the fact that until now SiS, unlike VIA, had a license for FSB 400 and 533 MHz, shipments of its chipsets increased significantly, while the market share of VIA was gradually decreasing. According to IDC, the market share of SiS in the global market increased in the third-fourth quarter of 2021 from 16% to 18.7%, while VIA decreased from 22% to 19.8%. VIA’s formal return to this market (after all, the company has not gone anywhere) will have to increase its pressure on SiS, although the latter announced yesterday that it had begun negotiations with Intel on licensing 800 MHz FSB.
The situation with second-tier manufacturers is even more interesting. While VIA was in dispute with Intel, they were quietly selling motherboards based on its chipsets, not worrying much about competition.
