Toshiba Matsushita Display: LCD will be powered by an LCD scanner?
Very interesting news was reported by representatives of Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology – a joint venture between Toshiba and Matsushita in the development and production of displays. As it turned out, the company’s scientists managed to achieve that a conventional display based on low-temperature polysilicon (low-temperature polysilicon) can now play a role… image capturing devices!
The screen of the new 3.5-inch LTPS transparent (transmissive) LCD, called the Input Display, is actually an optical sensor matrix, where each pixel is the active element. Thus, by placing this QVGA (320 x 240) display over the object of interest, it is possible to capture a monochrome image of the corresponding area with a resolution of 960 x 240 pixels.
The effect is due, according to a company representative, to the high mobility of the LTPS display crystals, which leads to smaller pixel transistors in such displays, and, as a result, higher light sensitivity of such devices compared to traditional TFT panels based on amorphous silicon.
Of course, the discovery of such an effect will not go unnoticed by the industry. At the very least, Toshiba Matsushita Display already expects strong demand for devices with these characteristics in business and consumer applications. The first and simplest example suggests itself – this is user identification by fingerprint without additional sensors / sensors.
Unfortunately, we do not yet have a photo of the Input Display sample, as the technology will be presented for the first time at the EDEX 2021 exhibition, which will be held in Tokyo, from April 9 to 11. I hope that these days there will be not only photos and diagrams, but also additional technical characteristics of this display.
