The first AMD Opteron cluster system in Russia. Opteron 84x / 14x Series Production Plans
Today, on June 26, the Russian company T-Platforms, together with the Moscow office of AMD corporation and the Institute of Program Systems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, announced the release of the first product of the line of 64-bit T-Forge clusters and the opening of the Cluster Technologies Center based on the T-Forge 32 cluster.
It is planned that the CCT will be used by corporate clients, educational institutions and other interested organizations to assess the feasibility of using the specified platform for their tasks.
T-Forge 32 system consists of sixteen dual-processor nodes with AMD Opteron 244 processors. The amount of disk memory is 1 TB.
Gigabit Ethernet is used to connect nodes. In addition, it is planned to create systems with the number of processors 8, 16 and 64. More powerful systems are available on special request. Peak performance of a system with 32 processors is estimated at 115 GFlops. The cost (including installation, configuration, three-year warranty service) is 79 thousand US dollars.
The cluster runs on the SLES OS (SuSE Linux Enterprise Server). In addition, we use our own hardware and software development of the ISS for cluster management. It allows you to remotely control the operation of the cluster, starting from the inclusion of individual modules,
ending with terminal access to each of them.
ISS specialists conducted comprehensive testing of this system and noted a high level of performance when working with both 32-bit code and 64-bit mode.
This presentation can also be considered the official announcement of Opteron processors in Russia. As Aleksey Nechuyatov, marketing manager in the commercial segment of the AMD representative office in Russia and the CIS, explained, AMD considers it important not just to present a separate new product, but to completely turnkey solutions based on it, including both hardware and software support.
Well, and lastly – some news about AMD’s plans to release Opteron processors. In just a few weeks, the start of deliveries of the 84x series will be announced (for 4 and 8 processor configurations). And in the third quarter, the 14x family is expected to appear. As for the clock frequency, the company plans to raise it to 2 GHz by the fall.
