Hitachi starts developing ultra-thin “e-paper”

According to a report by Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Hitachi has announced that it is expanding work on a new technology for the production of ultra-thin LCD panels, on the basis of which the so-called “electronic newspapers” will be designed.

Hitachi specialists, together with scientists from the Japanese Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and the Optoelectronic Industry and Technology Development Association, intend to bring the technology to a commercial cycle in 2021. The new technology is based on the use of new organic materials, coupled with the principle of “printing”. Thanks to this, scientists intend to reduce the thickness of transistor films to 1 mm or less.

Hitachi plans to bring production costs to one-tenth of the traditional silicon wafer TFT technology, mainly by simplifying the process and reducing the quantity and cost of materials used in production.
