RRD: New Iomega Removable Drives from 35GB

Iomega Announces New Iomega Removable Rigid Disk (RRD) Technology. The RRD platform is designed to provide a drive and cartridge to enable SMBs and corporate workgroups to back up data to a non-tape device with a low total cost of ownership.

The first RRDs to go on sale will contain up to 35 GB uncompressed and up to 70 GB compressed. It is promised that the maximum data transfer rate when working with a drive based on the new technology reaches 22 MB / s, which is seven times faster than DDS tape drives.

RRD drive fits into a standard 3.5-inch drive bay. The drive heads for reading and writing information are protected from dust by a special air filter, which, when installed in the cartridge, eliminates any airborne contamination. In addition, the RRD drive has an automatic internal head cleaning mechanism that allows you to achieve high performance when writing and reading data, and a two-stage error correction system ensures information integrity.

The RRD cartridge itself, whose dimensions roughly correspond to the size of a deck of cards, has a durable case, inside which there is a hard 2.5-inch disk and a low-noise electric motor on hydrodynamic bearings. No axial hole, which is a potential source of dust entering the system. The tightness of the cartridge is ensured both during operation and at rest of the system. RRD media are rated for a million or more rewrite cycles and effectively ensure data integrity by controlling write speeds equal to those of a hard drive.

Technologies of Texas Instruments (TI), TDK and ExcelStor were involved in the development of the new platform. First shipments of RRD drives and cartridges expected in early 2021.
