Boxed Opteron 240 and Opteron 242 – already in Japanese retail!

It was nice to know today that the recently announced 64-bit Opteron processors have already appeared on the shelves of computer stores in the Japanese capital. It’s nice precisely because the announcement was not paper-based, and there is a hope that sales of such chips around the world will begin in the very near future. It is also interesting to note that the chips went on sale in a boxed version.

In total, two new processors appear in Japanese retail now – the Opteron 240 with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz and the Opteron 242 with a clock speed of 1.6 GHz. For some reason, the senior chip, the Opteron 244 (1.8 GHz), has not yet reached retail, it is still unknown: maybe the output of chips is still small, or maybe the point is in its more than high starting price, which was considered irrelevant for retail…

As a matter of fact, our reader will not be able to catch a photograph of a “naked” Opteron processor, even I managed to photograph such a chip at the Moscow exhibition “Comtek 2021” (see. the day before yesterday news of Comtek 2021: the highlight of the program is the Opteron platform). The Japanese news is interesting because, firstly, they first show boxed Opteron processors, and secondly, retail prices were announced for the first time, albeit taking into account Japanese specifics. Plus, it was interesting to look at the dimensions of the stock cooler for such processors.

So, now the Opteron 240 is offered in Tokyo retail at ?38800 (something about $ 323), Opteron 242 chips – by ?95800 (about $ 798). Well, it quite correlates with AMD’s officially announced wholesale prices for these processors – $ 283 and $ 690, respectively.
