AMD: Athlon 64 and DDR400, Thorton processor core

Japanese sources have published another piece of data on the prospects for the emergence of new processors, this time – from AMD. And again new names of processor cores sounded. Despite the fact that PC Watch, as a rule, does not publish rumors, I would not want this information to be perceived as the ultimate truth. Moreover, there is no official confirmation of this information anywhere.

So, according to the latest data, almost no one doubts the appearance of AMD Athlon XP processors with FSB 400 MHz support.
Japanese sources do not reject the possibility of the appearance of versions of the Athlon XP chip with a Barton core and 400 MHz FSB (most likely with a rating of 3200+). Presumably, the real clock speed of such processors will be 2.2 GHz. As for other versions of chips with a Barton core and 400 MHz FSB, it is quite possible that Athlon XP 3000+ processors with 400 MHz FSB and a real frequency of 2.1 GHz will appear. Of course, compared to the model with the same rating, FSB 333 MHz and a real clock frequency of 2.167 GHz, there is a decrease in clock frequency, however, in the 400 MHz version, according to the Japanese, an advantage in the form of lower power consumption appears.

And now – a surprise: according to the same sources, AMD intends to introduce a new processor core with 256 KB of L2 cache named Thorton. Having pleased us with the new name, the source of information only adds that it is quite possible that such processors with a rating of 3000 + / 3200 + and higher will appear. It is also suggested that the size of the Thorton core, with an architecture comparable to Thoroughbred, the size of the L2 cache and markings, will have a smaller area and power consumption. A legitimate question arises: who are you, Thorton? Is it the younger brother of Mr. Barton, with the L2 cache SRAM halved to 256 KB?

That’s all that is known so far about it, Even about the release dates nothing new. However, there are also suggestions that despite the withdrawal from production of Duron brand chips, AMD may not abandon its use in the future. It is quite possible that chips with a Thorton core may appear under this trademark (so as not to “get under the feet” of Barton chips).

The rest of the clarifications on AMD’s plans for the release of new processors were summarized by the VR-Zone website:

Opteron (WS / Server):

  • SledgeHammer Core – 1MB L2 cache, 0.13μm SOI, Q2 2021 (Apr 22)
  • Athens core: 1MB L2 cache, 0.09μm SOI, H1 2021

Desktop Athlon 64:

  • ClawHammer core: 1 MB L2 cache, 0.13 micron SOI, DDR400; versions rated 2800 + / 3100 + / 3400 + / 3700 + (real clock rates 1.6 GHz, 1.8 GHz, 2.0 GHz, 2.2 GHz) – Q3 2021, 4000+ (2.4 GHz ) – fourth quarter 2021
  • San Diego core: 1MB L2 cache, 0.09μm SOI, H1 2021
  • Paris Core: 256KB L2 cache, 0.13μm SOI, 3200+ (2.0GHz?) – Q3 2021, 3500+ – Q4 2021
  • Victoria core: 256 KB L2 cache, 0.09 μm SOI, H1 2021

Mobile Athlon 64:

  • ClawHammer core: 1MB L2 cache, 0.13μm SOI, H2 2021
  • Odessa core: 1 MB L2 cache, 0.09 μm SOI, H1 2021
