Intel and AMD are preparing specifications for “smart” memory modules

According to the EE Times, at the June session of the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) a special group within the organization plans to consider two independent from each other, but essentially equivalent proposals from Intel and AMD aimed at defining the specifications of the so-called “smart” modules memory (smart memory module) – the foundation of a new interconnection structure in future PCs and servers.

Until now, there are no details about the essence of the proposals of both companies, however, schematically, the essence can be conveyed as follows: it is planned, in fact, to introduce a small logical hub module into each DRAM module. Initially, this development will be used in high-end server systems with a large amount of memory, although, according to some JEDEC participants, in the future, such an architecture may become a harbinger of a more efficient memory bus in PCs and servers, used both in the graphics subsystem and for RAM. In addition, it is possible that the new architecture will later be used not only with DRAM, but also with other types of memory, for example, flash memory and MRAM.

Intel and AMD representatives refuse to give details of their proposals or compare them with those of another company. Perhaps we will really learn the essence of the technology only during the June session of JEDEC. Dean Klein, vice president of Micron Technology, has learned that Intel and AMD are preparing their concepts for “smart” memory hubs during discussions at this week’s Windows Hardware Engineering Conference here Wednesday (WinHEC ). According to Klein, the new technology, in addition to increasing the memory density in high-end PCs, will reduce latency, increase performance and, in the future, will be transferred to low-end systems.
As for the commercialization of the idea of ”smart” DRAM hubs, it will take at least a year, and versions of the architecture for other types of memory are not expected on the market in the next three to four years. In our news, we will definitely return to this topic as soon as there is less fog on this issue.
