CE Linux: OS for consumer electronics will be ready soon

Despite the fact that in SCO vs. Linux has not yet dotted all i’s (by the way, the hype around the company’s lawsuit against IBM has somehow subsided noticeably, although the first hearing has already taken place), several companies have announced the creation of a joint group that will have to develop a specialized operating system for Linux based for managing consumer electronics devices (primarily cell phones and DVD devices). If the intentions of companies, including Sony, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Hitachi, NEC, Philips, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba, are serious, then such a system can become one of the alternatives to Microsoft Windows CE. IBM also announced its desire to join the CE Linux Forum (CELF).

However, CELF itself is still cautious about enthusiastic notes in the media, not wanting to wear the label “competitor to Windows CE”. The group is currently working to create an operating system that works on mobile devices, and primarily to significantly reduce boot times compared to both Windows and desktop Linux. By the end of the summer, the source code of the CE Linux operating system will be published in open sources.
