ATI partners discuss the possibility of moving to DDR-II

When ATI officially announced that the Radeon 9800 Pro will feature DDR-I,
many wondered if this card could compete with the Geforce FX equipped with
DDR-II.

On the one hand, the use of DDR-I gives ATI the ability to supply video cards
with a lot of memory at a relatively low price. On the other hand, the chips
DDR-II with a clock speed above 400 MHz is still in short supply, which means high
prices for this memory.

However, NVIDIA’s choice is reasonable and understandable for those who need fast memory – for example,
if the memory controller has a 128-bit interface, then the bandwidth
buses – the main drawback of a video card, which can be compensated for by a fast
memory.

Radeon 9700 and 9800 memory controllers have a 256-bit interface. Although the chips
DDR-II for such a controller are already available, they are still in short supply and very expensive,
so for now it is planned to release and sell a limited number of video cards with
256 MB DDR-II – the average retail price of such monsters is (overseas)
about $ 600.

As noted in one unconfirmed post, one of ATI’s partners is considering
the ability to use equip 256 MB memory card with 128-bit interface,
using a “dual channel memory” approach. However, this is not only not
will give a gain in performance, but it can also lower it on the contrary.
