Cooligy: new electroosmosis liquid cooling system
Californian Cooligy has developed a new pumped liquid cooling system that has no moving parts, the New Scientist website reported.
The Cooligy system differs from competitors (Hitachi, NEC, etc.) pump, the principle of which is based on electroosmosis. The pump was designed by Ken Goodson of Stanford University.
The central part of the pump is a glass disc 2 mm thick and 5 cm in diameter. The disc has many through holes with a diameter of about 1 micron. An electric charge is induced on the disk surface, creating an electric field gradient in the pores and forcing ions to move along the pores, dragging water molecules along with them.
In the prototype of the Goodson pump, it was possible to achieve a flow rate of 200 mm per minute, which, according to the inventor, should be enough to cool the chip dissipating up to 120 watts per square meter. cm.
There are, however, fears, expressed by skeptics from other companies, that the approach of mixing the charge with the coolant can seriously interfere with the operation of the processor.
