SARS: manufacturers insist on postponing Computex
There is a growing movement in the ranks of Taiwanese electronics manufacturers in support of the decision to postpone the start of Taipei Computex 2021, which was previously scheduled for June 2-6. The reason is the same: atypical pneumonia (SARS). Today it became known that more than 20 manufacturers of motherboards and PC components have signed a petition to the Chinese trade organization CETRA (China External Trade Development Council) and the Taipei Computer Association (TCA) with a request to postpone Computex 2021.
According to reports from sources close to the motherboard business, the petition has already been signed by all representatives of the first tier sector – Asustek Computer, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), Micro-Star International (MSI) and Gigabyte Technology; in addition, they were joined by some second-tier companies, plus several system integrators and chipset developer VIA Technologies.
In parallel with the promotion of this petition, there is also another initiative group in Taiwanese manufacturing circles: the second petition, which will be sent to TCA, is signed by the manufacturers of notebooks and industrial PCs.
According to TCA representatives, the final decision on the postponement or cancellation of the exhibition will be made this week, after consultations with representatives of CETRA. Of course, manufacturers are interested in knowing this solution – whatever it may be, as early as possible, since it will be possible to avoid unnecessary costs for equipping exhibition stands and other exhibition costs. However, despite the fact that the threat of infection with SARS in Taiwan is much lower than in China or Hong Kong, it is already known that many foreign customers have decided to cancel their visit to Computex in order to reduce the possibility of infection to zero.
